Experiences of Illness and Socialization of Suffering in Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

|
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome(CFS) is a debilitating illness of unknown etiology and have been recognized as either nonexistent or psychosomatic for decades even though this disease causes severe physical distress. This study aims to investigate their illness reality. Patient’s narratives are around 30 cases including both at home and foreign, mostly extracted from the internet community which is run by first author. Study finds that, illness experience depicted by patients are helpful to understand and define the malady of serious nature and also explores patient’s socialization of their suffering. CFS don’t attain status of disease, since it wasn’t got caught from the biomedical centric paradigm. Furthermore, widespread apathy of Korean healthcare professionals are contributing on reinforcing trivialization about CFS. Therefore, medical knowledge which is made with the participation of patients are necessary. Finally, policy implication is that this kind of new medical paradigm and multilevel, multidisciplinary endeavor should be accommodated to tackle the problem.
